Prof. Ronald Chiu Ying-chun

Mr. Ronald Chiu graduated from the Department of Communication of Hong Kong Baptist College in 1975 and obtained a Master’s degree in Journalism at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2006. He is currently Executive Director of i-Cable News Ltd and i-Cable Sports Ltd. Mr.Chiu worked for Commercial Television and Television Broadcasts Ltd and joined Wharf Cable (now i-Cable) as a consultant in 1991. Two years later, he was appointed Assistant News Controller and has been the Executive Director of the News and Sports Division since 2002.

Mr. Chiu is distinguished as a pioneer in the early and successful adoption of new technology. He was one of the first to recognise the revolutionary potential of live news broadcasts. Mr. Chiu was part of the team which successfully launched the world’s first 24-hour Chinese news channel in 1993. He launched Hong Kong’s first fully digitised news centre in 2002.

Mr. Chiu has made tremendous contributions to the broadcast industry as well as journalism and media education. His professional service in the sector has also been well recognised. He has served in key positions for Hong Kong News' Executives' Association for more than 20 years and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of Hong Kong Press Council. He has been involved in the production of many news reports, with one honoured a PATER Award in 1988 and another with a Gold Medal at the New York Television and Film Festival Awards in 1990.

Mr. Chiu cares greatly about his alma mater, where he has acted as a mentor to aspiring journalism students, delivered guest lectures, and contributed his expertise as an advisor on course development. He was a member of the Advisory Board as well as a judge of Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators Award. He has played an active role in many activities of HKBU and contributed to the celebration of its 50th and 55th anniversary events. With his wealth of professional experience and extensive industry network, Mr. Chiu serves as Chairman of Organising Committee on Alumni Events of HKBU 60th Anniversary Celebrations and gives valuable advice and support to the planning and running of the celebratory events. He was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Communicator Award (Journalism and Media Category) and an Honorary University Fellowship by HKBU in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
