Award Recipients

Ms. May Chan Suk-mei, SBS, JP

Ms. May Chan is currently Director (News and Public Affairs) of Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company Ltd and hostess of two insightful weekly social affairs radio programmes – Saturday Forum and Beautiful Sunday. She graduated from Department of Communication of Hong Kong Baptist College in 1977 and attained a Master’s degree in Journalism at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2001.

Ms. Chan embarked on her preeminent career in media industry upon graduation and is a veteran journalist with nearly 40 years of experience. She possesses extensive management and practical experience in the mass communication. She was Chairperson and committee member of Hong Kong News Executives’ Association and is currently Chairperson of Journalism Education Foundation Hong Kong and Vice-Chairperson of Hong Kong News-Expo Working Group.

Ms. Chan spares no efforts in raising the standard of media practitioners and has been actively engaged in promoting the development of her alma mater. She served as a judge in various significant journalist competitions, including Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators Award of HKBU School of Communication and Hong Kong News Awards of Hong Kong News Executives’ Association. In addition to her current capacity as Court Member of HKBU, and Chairman of Advisory Committee of the School of Communication of HKBU, Ms. Chan is also Chairman of the Organising Committee on Communication and Publicity of HKBU 60th Anniversary Celebrations where she contributes valuable advice and support to the promotion of the University’s diamond jubilee. She was awarded the HKBU Distinguished Alumni Communicator Award (Journalism and Media Category) in 2008, and named Honorary University Fellow of HKBU in 2009.

Ms. Chan is devoted to serving the community and is currently a member of the Commission on Poverty, a founding member of SC.Net of Community Investment and Inclusion Fund under the Labour and Welfare Bureau of the HKSAR Government, and Chairwoman of the Fund’s task force. She was also Chairwoman of Mass Communications Training Board of Vocational Training Council. Ms. Chan was honoured with a Bronze Bauhinia Star in 2000 by the HKSAR Government for her contribution to Hong Kong’s mass communication industry. She was also appointed Justice of the Peace in 2007. In 2010, Ms. Chan was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Vocational Training Council.
