The Faculty of Science and the Alumni Affairs Office jointly presented a talk on 10 April attracting 300 registrants, including students, alumni, donors and guests of other institutions. Titled “Generative AI for Healthcare and Beyond”, the talk provided a broad introduction to Generative AI (GenAI), focusing on its applications in the healthcare sector and exploring the future trends of GenAI across various industries.

The event commenced with welcoming remarks from Professor Michael Ng, Dean of the Faculty of Science. In his remarks, Professor Ng highlighted how the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) presents tremendous challenges and opportunities across various sectors. The talk underscored the Faculty’s recognition of AI’s transformative power and showcased the proactive effort of the University in preparing students for an AI-driven future.

The talk featured Professor William Cheung, Associate Vice-President (Transdisciplinary Education), Professor in Computer Science, Director of Centre of Health Informatics, as the keynote speaker. Professor Cheung provided an overview of GenAI and discussed recent developments in creating GenAI solutions for healthcare, such as predictive analytics on Electronic Health Records and X-ray report generation.

Following Professor Cheung’s presentation, a panel discussion on the future trends of GenAI was held, featuring alumni Chan Ka-ho (Computer Science), Head of Analytic Platform of HSBC and Dr Charles Cheung (Applied & Computational Mathematics; Mathematics), Senior Data Scientist and Deputy Director, NVIDIA AI Technology Center HK. The discussion delved into several topics, including the importance of GenAI, the opportunities and challenges it brings, and the gap between university education and industry in terms of AI integration. During the panel discussion, participants actively participated in the Q&A session, posing thought-provoking questions for further discussion.

The event was graced by the presence of Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary who presented souvenirs as tokens of appreciation to alumni Dr Charles Cheung and Chan Ka-ho for their valuable insights after the panel discussion.

This talk series, presented by the Faculty of Science and the Alumni Affairs Office, aims to highlight the significant contributions that HKBU’s pre-eminent faculty members, professors, and alumni have made in their remarkable journey of knowledge discovery. Through this faculty-student-alumni engagement initiative, both offices hope to highlight the achievements of our faculty members, nurture future-shaping students, and engage alumni who bring transformative impacts to society.
