Alumnus Andrew Wong Shares his Career Insights with Students and Young Alumni at Chill Chat

Organised by the Alumni Affairs Office, the first Chill Chat in 2023 was successfully held on 30 March at HKBU Lounge. Alumnus Andrew Wong (Business Administration), Chief Executive Officer of Health and Beauty North Asia at DFI Retail Group, was invited to be the keynote speaker and shared his career insights and life wisdom with the theme “The difficult, somewhat lonely yet worthy journey to avoid being a bad leader –perspective from someone still trying hard”. The event attracted about 25 students and young alumni to join.
The event began with a short speech given by alumnus Andrew Wong. With his personal stories, Andrew shared his view on how difficult it is to be a great leader. Even though he has been working for many years, he is still trying to learn how to avoid being a “bad leader”. He believes that everyone can be a leader, and the attributes that define a great leader are to lead by example, be committed and empathetic. At the end of his speech, Andrew encouraged the students and young alumni that before they become leaders of society in the future, they should try their best to leverage every opportunity and strive for becoming a leader who can unify and motivate people.
After his speech, Andrew, together with two alumni guests, alumni Steve Tsang (Business Administration), Chief Financial Officer of Asia Pacific at SSP Group Plc., and Bong Ng (Business Administration), Finance Director of Oriental Payment Group Holdings Limited, mingled with the participants in small groups under a relaxing and cosy ambience while enjoying the food. Participants received a lot of practical advice and inspiration through interacting with the outstanding alumni.
Chill Chat, firstly introduced in 2021, is an innovative engagement platform where students and alumni can closely interact with each other in a casual setting. Chill Chat provides students and young alumni with the opportunity to widen their horizons in areas of personal growth, career development and network building via close encounters with our eminent alumni at the event.
