Alumni Attend HKBU Symphony Orchestra Annual Gala Concert 2022 to Experience the First-ever Human-machine Collaborative Musical Performance

Event Information

The HKBU Symphony Orchestra presented the first human-machine collaborative performance of its kind in the world at its Annual Gala Concert in the Hong Kong City Hall on 14 July.

Entitled “A Lovers’ Reunion”, the Concert was an accredited event celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. It featured the integration of technology in musical performance, which is also complemented by an AI virtual choir and AI virtual dancers, and an AI media artist. All the AI technologies presented at the Concert were developed by a team of researchers from HKBU’s Augmented Creativity Lab, which is led by Professor Guo Yike, Vice-President (Research and Development), and Professor Johnny M Poon, Deputy Project Coordinator, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research), Founding Dean of the School of Creative Arts, music director and conductor of the HKBU Symphony Orchestra and member of the Collegium Musicum Hong Kong.

The Concert attracted about 800 people, including government officials, community leaders, Council and Court members and senior management of HKBU, including, among others, Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the HKSAR; Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the Council and the Court, and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor. A number of alumni also attended the Concert to experience in person the innovative performance showcasing the outstanding artistic talent of HKBU student musicians, and how the performance, for the first time, was augmented with artificial intelligence.
