Event Information

To commemorate the 60th Anniversary of Hong Kong Baptist University, over a hundred talented and renowned alumni and friends pooled their expertise for over a year to present “We are BUddies” Alumni Show, as a birthday gift to their alma mater. The Show was successfully held on Saturday, 30 January 2016, at Academic Community Hall, HKBU, attracting over 1,300 guests, alumni, staff and students to attend.

The Show was put on stage by over 100 celebrity and notable alumni from 7 Faculties or Schools and 15 academic departments and across 6 generations. Presenting the stories of the five presidents of HKBU, the Show prompted collective reminiscing of the important milestones of HKBU through a wide array of performances such as drama, orchestra, dance, singing, recitation and magic show. Tokens of appreciation were also presented to the former presidents including the late Dr Lam Chi-fung, Dr Daniel Tse, Professor Ng Ching-fai, Professor Albert Chan and the current president, Professor Roland Chin.

The Cocktail Reception of the Show was graced with the presence of Guest of Honour, Dr Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, HKSAR Government; Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of HKBU Council and Court and Chairman of HKBU 60th Anniversary Steering Committee; Mrs Pamela Chan, Deputy Chairman and Mrs Doreen Chan, Treasurer of HKBU Council and Court; Professor Roland Chin; Professor Frank Fu, Associate Vice-President and Chairman of HKBU 60th Anniversary Co-ordinating Committee; and Alumnus Ronald Chiu, Chairman of HKBU 60th Anniversary Organising Committee on Alumni Events.

Mr Cheng Yan-kee expressed his sincere gratitude to members of the HKBU 60th Anniversary Organising Committee on Alumni Events and alumni for contributing their talents and efforts to prepare such a remarkable extravaganza. He remarked that the Show confirmed once again the importance of alumni in the University community who demonstrate the fruition of the University’s values under the ethos of whole person education.

In his remarks, Dr Ko Wing-man noted that “We are BUddies” Alumni Show was webcast live globally, enabling alumni around the globe and members of the community.  He believes that the Show will give a good account of the path HKBU has walked and showcase the excellence HKBU has achieved.

Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra and Yip’s Children’s Choir kicked off the Show by leading all the guests to sing the Anthem. The cast includes Mr Lau Siu-ming acting as a long-serving care-taker, Alumni Simon Ngai, Leung Ka-kuen, Justin Chiu, Ip Ka-po and Lawrence Cheng as the five presidents and Alumna Lo Koon-lan as the wife of the late Dr. Lam Chi-fung. Veteran media practitioners including Alumni May Chan, Ivan Ho, Ronald Chiu, Kan Hok-hei and Hilda Ho brought audience back in time through their news reporting. The choral speaking team of The HKBU Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School recited the poem “School Eulogy” which told the difficulties that HKBU encountered on the path to growth. The audience was amazed by the astonishing magic show by Alumnus Bond Lee, the wonderful singing performance by Alumna Becky Lee and Student Angela Hui and the energetic dance performance by HKBU Dance Association and Dance Kingdom.

With guitar and drum accompaniment by The Hong Kong Fingerstyle Guitar Orchestra and Ban’s GIG Drums, Alumnus Albert Au performed a medley of classic songs and the HKBU 60th Anniversary theme song which he created with Alumnus Cheng Kwok-kong and Alumna Karen Wong. His performance marked the climax of the celebration. As the grand finale, the performing cast joined the University management in a toasting ceremony to celebrate the 60th birthday of HKBU and success of the Show.

Highlights of the Show will be broadcast at Harbour City, Roadshow, shopping malls of Sino Group and HKBU Campus TV.
