HKBU Homecoming Day 2013 Infused with Friendship and Fun
Event Information
Alumni participating in Homecoming Day 2013 held from 26 to 28 October were infused with Friendship and Fun. Themed by “Good Old Days at HKBU” and aiming at bringing a home-sweet-home feeling to alumni, various events have been staged within these three days.
To start with, alumni of HKBU Alumni Association of Southern California (HKBUAASC) came all the way back to stage a Cantonese Opera at the Academic Community Hall. As a token of appreciation, President and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Albert S.C. Chan presented a souvenir to HKBUAASC represented by former President alumnus Ken Chan.
Alumni also had a great time rekindling friendship at the Alumni Cocktail Reception held on the same day at Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Sports and Cultural Centre. The University’s senior management extended a warm welcome to over 170 alumni attending the reception by writing the theme of Homecoming Day 2013 in Chinese calligraphy.
Following the Cocktail Reception was the Alumni Investiture Ceremony whereby Prof. Albert S.C. Chan presented 120 alumni graduated in 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983 and 1988 with medals to recognise their contributions to family and society over the years. Emcees alumna Amen Ng and alumnus Eddie Ho led the programme and the attendees were updated of the HKBU’s development through a welcome speech by Prof. Albert S.C. Chan followed by an introductory corporate video of HKBU.
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of its founding, the School of Communication held various celebratory events including the 45th Anniversary lunch gathering, “The Best of Times: Picturing Your Campus Memories” Photos Exhibition and “The Anchor of Today is YOU” Tour of the School of Communication. Also held was the award presentation ceremony of the 4th Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators, during which 11 distinguished young communicators in the fields of communication and journalism whose work demonstrates the highest professional standards, exemplifies the philosophy “Truth is Virtue”, and displays a high degree of originality were recognised.
The delightful ambience carried onto 27 October 2013 when the Century Club Grandeur Cha Cha Cha was held to raise fund for the University. Thanks to the vibrant involvement and ardent support of the HKBU Century Club, over 130 alumni, eminent members of the community and guests attended the event which featured charity bazzar, charity singing and dancing, as well as performances by professional Latin champion dancers and renowned singers. Impressed by the glamorous performances and dazzling scenes, participants enjoyed themselves to the full.
28 October 2013 was another festive day with many activities going on. To commemorate its Golden Jubilee, Hong Kong Baptist University Alumni Association (HKBUAA) had launched a fund-raising campaign earlier this year which raised a total of HK$500,000 of which HK$260,000 has been used to set up scholarship for students of different disciplines. To mark the achievement, a Tree Planting cum Cheque Presentation Ceremony at the lawn near Academic Community Hall was held. Officiating at the Ceremony were Executive Members of the Association and senior management of the University, who together planted a pine on campus which signifies perseverance and longevity.
A guided campus tour was also arranged for 40 alumni from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s who were deeply impressed by the expanded campus and latest facilities of the University.
As the grand finale of Homecoming Day, an Alumni Dinner was held at the Banqueting House at MegaBox, Kowloon Bay. No words than warm and wonderful can better describe the dinner which celebrated long-standing alumni friendship and the 80th Birthday of President Emeritus Dr. Daniel Tse Chi-wai, who attended the dinner with his wife Mrs. Kitty Tse as Guest of Honour. To kick-start the dinner and express the birthday wishes to Dr. Tse, students from HKBU Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School staged an opening dance performance.
Under rounds of applause and a birthday song sung by over 380 participants of the dinner, Dr. Daniel and Mrs. Kitty Tse cut the birthday cake accompanied by Prof. Albert S.C. Chan and Mrs. Mabel Chan. Prof. Chan presented an artifact engraved with a Chinese acrostic written by himself to Dr. Tse as a birthday gift. As a token of appreciation, Dr. Tse had written a poem for the University and both poems written by Dr. Tse and Prof. Chan were printed on photo jackets given to all the attending guests as souvenir.
Another highlight of the dinner was the gold watch presentation by Dr. Tse to Prof. Chan. The watch, which was a precious gift for Dr. Tse from all academic staff of the then Hong Kong Baptist College 42 years ago, was donated in March 2013 by Dr. Tse to HKBU for fundraising. In response to Dr. Tse’s invitation, six alumni namely Delia Chan Wai-sheung, Dickson Shang Tat-yan, Wong Nga-chung, Wu Po-kung, William Leung Wing-cheung and Marianna Tsang Wai-chun generously donated a total of $1.5M to their alma mater. As a token of appreciation, all donors were presented with calligraphy of a poem written by Dr. Tse.
A special video featuring the history of Shiu Pong Hall (former residence of Dr. Daniel Tse and Mrs. Kitty Tse) and sharing of Dr. Tse was shown which brought touching memories for all the guests. The ambience of the dinner climaxed when Dr. and Mrs. Tse toasted around tables together with the senior management of the University. The dinner ended on a perfect note when the emcees alumnus Francis Mak and alumna Rebecca Chan together with a group of alumni led the house to sing a song that signifies friendship.
